Metal Braces

Discover How Fixed Braces Can Transform Your Smile

Traditional metal braces remain the most widely used and versatile orthodontic treatment for a reason: they are incredibly effective at correcting even the most complex dental alignments.

At Coulthard Dental Practice, we use high-grade, modern stainless steel brackets that are smaller and more comfortable than those of the past. Whether you are looking to correct severe crowding, close gaps, or improve your bite, our specialist orthodontist provides precise, specialist-led care to ensure you achieve a healthy, functional, and beautiful smile.

The gold standard for complex alignment

Metal braces are often the best choice for patients at our Wilmslow dental practice who require significant tooth movement. Because they are a fixed appliance, they provide our clinicians with the highest level of control over each individual tooth’s position.

This system is particularly effective for correcting bite issues, such as overbites and resolving severe rotations. By choosing metal braces at Coulthard Dental Practice, you are opting for a reliable, time-tested method that consistently delivers exceptional results, regardless of how complex your orthodontic needs may be.

  • High-grade, durable stainless steel components
  • Precise control for complex orthodontic cases
  • Versatile treatment suitable for all ages
  • Expert fitting and regular progress monitoring

A contemporary take on a classic treatment

Modern orthodontics has transformed the experience of wearing metal braces. Today’s brackets are designed with low-profile, rounded edges to reduce irritation to the inside of your mouth, making them much more comfortable than older versions.

At our Wilmslow dental practice, we also find that many of our younger patients enjoy the customisation aspect of metal braces. You can choose from a variety of coloured elastic bands at each adjustment appointment, allowing you to personalise your braces throughout your journey. For adults, we often use smaller, more discreet silver bands to maintain a professional appearance.

Your path to a straighter smile

Comprehensive assessment

Your first appointment includes a comprehensive orthodontic assessment, including examination of the teeth, bite, jaws and gums, alongside 3D digital scans and orthodontic photographs to help us plan your treatment accurately. Radiographs may also be recommended to further assess the teeth, roots and supporting bone. This allows us to determine whether metal braces are the most suitable treatment option for your smile goals.

Expert fitting

Your brackets are carefully bonded to your teeth and the initial archwire is placed. We’ll show you exactly how to keep your braces clean and your teeth healthy.

Ongoing adjustments

Every few weeks, you’ll visit our Wilmslow dental practice to have your braces adjusted. These small changes gradually guide your teeth into their perfect final positions.

Frequently asked questions

Every case is unique. On average, treatment lasts between 12 and 24 months. During your consultation at Coulthard Dental Practice, we will provide a more accurate estimate based on your individual alignment.

It is normal to feel some tenderness for a few days after your braces are first fitted and following your adjustment appointments. This is a sign that your teeth are moving. Most patients find this easily manageable and adapt to the feeling of the braces very quickly.

To protect your brackets and wires, we recommend avoiding very hard, crunchy, or sticky foods, such as toffees, hard crusts, or whole apples. We will provide you with a full list of “braces-friendly” foods during your fitting.

Brushing and flossing are more important than ever during orthodontic treatment. We recommend using interdental brushes to clean around the brackets and wires to ensure your teeth remain healthy and stain-free once the braces are removed.

Yes. If you play contact sports, we highly recommend wearing a custom-made orthodontic mouthguard to protect your teeth and your braces. If you play a wind instrument, there may be a short adjustment period, but most musicians adapt very quickly.
