Wisdom Tooth Removal

Expert surgical care to resolve the complications caused by third molars and protect your oral health.

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to emerge, usually in the late teens or early twenties. For many people, there is simply not enough room in the jaw for these teeth to erupt properly, leading them to become “impacted.”

At Coulthard Dental Practice, we provide expert assessment and surgical removal of wisdom teeth that are causing pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth. Our clinical team focuses on a gentle, precision-led approach to ensure your comfort and a rapid return to health.

Consultant-led solutions for complex third molars

When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it may grow at an angle, pushing against the neighbouring molar or becoming trapped beneath the gum line. This can create “food traps” that are impossible to clean, leading to tooth decay, gum disease, and painful infections known as pericoronitis. The adjacent tooth may also decay.

At our Wilmslow dental practice, we use advanced imaging to map the exact position of the wisdom tooth roots in relation to the alveolar nerve. This high-level diagnostic care allows our surgical team to plan the safest and most efficient path for removal, significantly reducing the risk of complications and ensuring a more predictable recovery.

  • Comprehensive imaging of nerve pathways
  • Expert management of all types impactions
  • Minimally invasive surgical techniques
  • Calm, clinical environment designed for patient comfort

Ensuring a comfortable and swift healing process

We understand that wisdom tooth removal is a procedure that many patients approach with a degree of apprehension. At Coulthard General & Specialist Dental Practice, we prioritise your peace of mind. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthetic, and conscious sedation to ensure you remain deeply relaxed throughout.

By using meticulous surgical techniques to section the tooth and carefully remove it, we minimise trauma to the surrounding bone and soft tissue. This precision-led approach is the key to reducing post-operative swelling and discomfort, allowing you to get back to your normal routine as quickly as possible. Professor Paul Coulthard has been undertaking oral surgery including wisdom tooth surgery for more that 30 years.

Your journey to comfort

Diagnostic assessment

We use digital X-rays or 3D scans to evaluate the position of your wisdom teeth and determine if removal is necessary to prevent future complications.

Surgical removal

Under local anaesthesia (or conscious sedation), the tooth is gently accessed and removed using specialist surgical protocols to protect the surrounding structures.

Post-operative support

We provide a comprehensive aftercare pack and clear instructions on how to manage the healing process, ensuring you feel supported until you are fully recovered.

Frequently asked questions

No. If your wisdom teeth are healthy, fully erupted, and positioned correctly, they can be left alone. We only recommend removal at our Wilmslow dental practice if they are causing pain, infection, or are likely to damage the health of your other teeth.

The procedure itself is performed under local anaesthesia, meaning the area will be completely numb and you will not feel any pain. You will be advised if conscious sedation is also needed. You may feel some pressure during the process. Any post-operative discomfort is usually well-managed with standard pain relief and our detailed aftercare guidance.

Depending on the complexity of the impaction, the removal of a single wisdom tooth typically takes between 20 and 45 minutes. We will give you a more accurate timeframe following your initial diagnostic scan.

Most patients experience some swelling for 3 to 5 days. We recommend taking it easy for the first 48 hours and avoiding strenuous exercise. Most people find they can return to work or university within three to five days.

As with any surgical procedure, some pain, swelling and bleeding are usual. Removal of lower wisdom teeth can also be associated with postoperative altered sensation to the tongue, lower lip or chin because of nerve injury. However, our use of imaging and Consultant-led surgical techniques at Coulthard Dental Practice significantly minimises these risks.
