Advancing clinical excellence through academic partnership and global innovation.
At Coulthard General & Specialist Dental Practice, we believe that world-class clinical care must be underpinned by rigorous scientific inquiry.
As a research-active practice, we bridge the gap between academic theory and clinical application, collaborating with leading universities and international healthcare institutions to refine the future of oral health.
Our work is dedicated to the development of evidence-based protocols that enhance patient safety and clinical outcomes. By contributing to global datasets and peer-reviewed studies, particularly in the fields of oral oncology and maxillofacial trauma, we ensure our patients benefit from the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in modern dentistry.

Oral Cancer
Around 10,000 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer each year in the UK. But with spotting mouth cancer early, a complete cure is often possible in up to 9 in 10 cases using surgery alone.
It is thought that that there are common mechanisms in the development of oral cancer, and cancer of the skin, oesophagus, cervix, lung and bladder. Professor Paul Coulthard, together with three colleagues, obtained £2.6M from Barts Charity in 2021 to set up the ‘Barts Centre for Squamous Cancer’ as a unique centre of excellence undertaking research into these cancers and especially oral cancer. Professor Coulthard is the PI (Principal Investigator).
That is why your regular Dental Examination at Coulthard General & Specialist Dental Practice always includes a visual check for oral cancer, pre-cancer and mouth conditions that can increase the risk of cancer.
Dental and Facial Injury
Professor Paul Coulthard leads a university Facial Injury Research Group. He is also the Founder & CEO of Bloomsbury Trust raising awareness of facial injury, advocating for reduction, and developing new technologies to support healthcare providers.
No wonder we are keen to promote the use of Sports Mouthguard’s! Well-designed Sports Mouthguard’s are effective in reducing damage to teeth, the mouth and jaw joint – they absorb and distribute direct impact energy and reduce transmitted forces. Sports Mouthguard’s bought over the counter (stock and mouth-formed) do not effectively reduce and prevent injury.
Anyone can be a victim of domestic abuse, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, socio-economic status or sexuality. Dental professionals are likely to observe and identify injuries to the head, eyes, ears, neck, face, mouth and teeth as well as other welfare concerns and so are well placed to refer patients to the appropriate support agency.
